A coffee with Mirella - Milano Cinque vie

The STAR-shaped district, the oldest heart of Milan. The history of the "5VIE"

The oldest district of Milan, nicknamed "delle 5Vie", has the shape of a star.
A few steps from the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, the Duomo, the Cordusio and the Sforzesco Castle, the Five Streets of Milan are these: Via del Bollo, Via Santa Marta, Via Santa Maria Podone, Via Santa Maria Fulcorina and Via Bocchetto.
The oldest crossroads and the heart of historic Milan has existed since the Roman Empire. The Old District is rich in Renaissance Courts and Paleochristian Churches, monuments, including imperial remains, museums, palaces and churches, even if many traces are lost.
Via Santa Maria Podone is the street that houses and gives its name to one of the oldest churches in Milan, dating back to the 9th century and founded on land donated by Vuerolfo Podone himself or "Pedone", so they say for the size of the feet .
Dynamic crossroads of trade already in Roman times, in medieval times it hosted a first medieval market.
The intersection of these streets was surrounded by colorful artisan shops and noble palaces that originally belonged to the Borromeo family, such as those of Carlo and Federico. The former was the patron saint of the city, and a copper statue of him by Bussola is now positioned on a column from the early 17th century. Unfortunately many of these buildings were destroyed during the bombing of the Second World War.
Only a small part of the Palazzo Borromeo survived, thanks to the intervention of Ferdinando Reggiori immediately after the war.

In the 1930s we find the headquarters of many banks, including the bank of Rome and today we find in Piazza Affari the Palazzo Mezzanotte headquarters of the Stock Exchange, built in 1932.

You can find fine artisan workshops, boutiques and art design studios. It dominates the district also known as the Borgo del design.

These historic spaces and courtyards become beautiful spaces for exhibitions of excellence during Design Week (5 Vie, in fact, is one of the districts of the city center where the Fuori Salone experiences some of its most intense moments every year)

The urban and historical-social innovation of the oldest district of the Meneghina city runs through design. Create a new form of tourism

"We have managed to make an area of ??the city international, that of the so-called '5Vie', which carries in its DNA the history, culture and creativity of Milan, a city of design or fashion. Thanks to its ability to create the 5-street district, in a few years it has become a place much loved by tourists, visitors and fashion and design operators "(Former Councilor C. Tajani)

The innovative context becomes the prerequisite for entrepreneurial initiatives in the sector that involve institutions, citizens and artisans and artists.

We are also witnessing a transformation of the residents from an area of ??the Milanese nobility to an area of ??the upper middle class.

The Milanese remember the beauty of this area as the Cinque Vie area crossed halfway by via Torino which becomes via Cesare Correnti.

It is a very elegant area which tends to preserve its heritage.

The character of this area was The art critic Philippe Daverio is known to everyone in the neighborhood.
However, it is estimated that many important personalities of Italian culture lived, including Leonardo da Vinci, Giuseppe Verdi, Petrarca and, if we go to Pop culture, Celentano also lived in via Cesare Correnti. So we have an artisan recovery area suitable for its particular styles for events related to design.
We can define it to all intents and purposes as the heart of Milan as regards the possibility of holding events with locations of all kinds.
This area has experienced the changes of a city while maintaining its own identity without being influenced by passing fashions.
The 5VIE has passed from the "Milan of the lead years" to the "Milan to drink", maintaining its artisanal and at the same time innovative nature, being a real concentration of galleries, craft and antiques shops, ateliers and d 'studios artist, but also shops dedicated to more contemporary clothing and design, all characterized by a profound vocation for research
This maze of narrow streets, an itinerary of refined tourism, is the result of a romanticism in which we find historic cafes, trattorias and restaurants and refined fashion ateliers including Fimelato.
These are the hidden treasures of Milan that make it a world capital of Design and Fashion.
