Gentle Leadership: A New Model for Business Growth
We have already explored the topic of kindness in the workplace: how an approach based on listening and empathy can make people more satisfied, and therefore more productive and committed to the company’s mission.
Today, we address the concept of gentle leadership—that is, the role of management and the "boss" in shaping a positive work environment. Far from being a synonym for weakness, gentle leadership represents a management model based on listening, respect, and valuing people, without compromising determination and effectiveness in achieving goals.
Unfortunately, however, these aspects are often overlooked: according to the HR Innovation Practice Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, only 7% of Italian workers report being happy in their workplace. Psychological well-being is a critical issue, with 42% of workers having taken at least one absence in the past year due to psychological or relational distress. At the same time, 94% of companies struggle to find qualified personnel, a sign that organizations must rethink their management models to attract and retain talent.
In an increasingly complex market and a fast-paced world where attracting and retaining talent is an ever-growing challenge, kindness can become a distinctive and competitive element for businesses.
Kindness and Leadership: Putting People at the Center
Machiavelli, in The Prince, questioned whether it is better for a leader to be loved or feared.
According to a recent SWG survey, kindness not only improves the corporate climate but also strengthens a leader’s authority: 75% of Italians interviewed believe that an empathetic and motivating leader is also perceived as more effective and respected.
Being a guide for people—loved and esteemed—holds much greater value than being feared for those who lead an organization.
The Future of Leaders
Gentle leadership is not just an ethical model but an effective strategy for tackling the challenges of the modern workplace. By fostering healthier and more collaborative environments, it generates value for both businesses and society.
Adopting kindness as a guiding principle in corporate governance means choosing an approach that balances assertiveness and listening, productivity and respect. This change is already underway, led by innovative leaders who combine success with humanity.
