How to wear wool in the summer
It is thought that the wool obtained from the fur of sheep was already used by the peoples of Mesopotamia, more than 3000 years ago, and later also by the Ancient Greeks who were portrayed wearing apparently woolen garments. However, it was the Romans who systematized the shearing and tanning technique, with special tools that speeded up the process and increased its quality. As you can understand then, wool is part of human history, thanks to its properties that we will discover together.
How is wool obtained?
The process that leads to obtaining the wool thread that we all know begins with the shearing of the sheep: classically the wool is from sheep, but it can also be from goat and in some regions of the world camel hair, llama, rabbit or dromedary. The hair is cut with shears that can be electric or mechanical, and the spring or autumn season is preferred. Then we proceed with washing and degreasing to make it clean and candid. At this point, the still raw wool is rolled up into dancers and sent to special woolen mills where it will be spun with two different techniques: it will be called carded wool if it is worked in short fribre, while if it is worked with long fibers it will be called worsted wool. Only after the wool thread has taken shape can we proceed with the dyeing.
Thermal properties of wool
It is generally thought that wool is a fabric to be used exclusively in winter, because it always feels soft and warm to the touch. In reality it all depends on the type of wool and the weight used to make the clothes. In fact, wool has a very high thermal coefficient, which allows the temperature to be kept constant. In fact, its fiber manages to trap a lot of air which acts as an insulator towards the outside: in this way, during the summer, wool is the fabric that prevents heat from coming into contact with the body. It also has hydroscopic capabilities, meaning it can easily absorb water and consequently sweat, giving a feeling of freshness. In a weight of around 110 g, it is more breathable than cotton and does not risk wrinkling like linen! This is why it is perfect for making men's suits.
