Raglan coat
Raglan coat, a staple of the masculine style
In the world of clothing, nowadays we find the word “slim” everywhere, so much so that I want to go against the tide: today I wore my classic Raglan coat, with a wide and sagging line.
This coat is iconic and recognizable at a glance thanks to the peculiarity of its sleeve characterized by seams arranged in a radial pattern from the base of the neck. This gives the Raglan coat a particular cut, which today we could define demodé, but which allows comfortable movement in the arms thanks to the wide round under the shoulder. Precisely for this reason the modern reworking of this sleeve sees the sleeve present above all in sportswear. And who knows that in a short time the wave of the slim fit will not run out to give way to the return of classic pieces such as the Raglan coat ... I see it very likely!
The invention of the Raglan sleeve
The Raglan sleeve has a singular and ancient history: the name derives from that of the English general F. J. M. Somerset Raglan, commander of the British troops in the Crimean War (1854-55). Lord Raglan, after losing an arm in the Battle of Waterloo, began to adopt this type of overcoat to hide the mutilation of the arm: the Raglian sleeve allowed him to use the saber with the other hand without having impediments, moreover it made it seem that the mutilated arm was instead hidden inside the sleeve. The model was conceived by the jacket manufacturer Aquascutum and was so popular that it spread and impressed itself forever among the coat models.
Timeless coat
From the mid-nineteenth century the term Raglan has remained to indicate the shape of the sleeve with diagonal cuts from the armpit to the neckline, frequently used in men's coats for the practicality of movement it allows: it will certainly not be the fashion of the slim fit that will kill the history! The Raglan coat is a classic garment and, as such, has not undergone extreme variations over time, and I say thank goodness! Its long line at the knee and soft, leaves ample freedom of movement, so much so that it can be worn over a jacket or a full-bodied shirt. His unmistakable cut will never move out of our closet, challenging the fashions and trends of the moment. Perfect in blue or camel, for a timeless look.
