Solaro

It happens to all of us to want to own something beautiful, precious and sought after. A Ferrari spider, a Patek Philippe watch, a Tiffany jewel, a tailored suit made with Solaro fabric. Writing about elegance, the significant example fell on the Solaro fabric, the top for the summer.

A suit made with the Solaro fabric should not be missing in the wardrobe of a true gentleman. It is an example of how the language of fabrics absorbs meanings that go beyond the aesthetic aspect.

Solaro: the "non plus ultra" of spring / summer fabrics

Despite the iridescent surface, military origins and the very men who wore it, over time have made the Solaro a niche product, the "non plus ultra" of spring / summer fabrics. The Solaro can be composed of two canvases or a pure wool twill, a yarn-dyed gabardine.

The Solaro is a Levantine-style worsted with an iridescent effect due to the different weft and warp color. Weighing around 310 grams, it can have different warps: small or large herringbone (rarely grain of rice or plain), dyed on dye on a beige background, iridescent with red reflections, obtained from the opposite red color.

The origins of the Solaro

Suitable for spring and summer seasons. Its name is patented, and is: "Original Solaro Made in England".

Solaro means adequate and resistant to sunlight. It has only one color, very bright and herringbone beige, with a brick-red reverse. Its origin is military, it was born in the tropics in the early 1900s. The British soldiers used the red part to line their helmets while the beige one as a continuation of the uniforms, to defend themselves from solar radiation (especially from ultraviolet rays), the primary cause of some tropical diseases.

In recent times, the Solaro, which is a registered trademark and produced almost exclusively by Smith Woolens, is loved by very few connoisseurs. It is a difficult fabric to see if you are not a good connoisseur of the art of dressing.

Suitable only for full, single or double-breasted dresses (both with half lining), there are many imitations around: similar fabrics, with the same workmanship, in more colors, without the original certification.

How to match the Solaro fabric

Personally I wear the Solaro dress with a suede tassel loafer, or even an oxford lace-up, with a very "British" flavor. The use of dark brown or at most burgundy shoes is categorical. White or light blue shirt. I personally do not disdain even a nice slightly marked line or a small Vichy check. Combined with a nice solid color tie, for striped or vichy shirts, with a striped tie, for solid colors.

I recommend bringing out the less evident colors of the fabric by choosing a matching clutch bag.

The Solaro lends itself to many combinations, all graceful. Someone will enhance it with intense colors, someone else will tone down its beauty. A classic that should never be missing in a man's wardrobe. Although it is still considered uncharted terrain for men's fashion (and I say thank goodness), a Solaro suit allows you to express the right balance between informality and elegance.
