The autumn jacket: the Quilted Jacket

Colonel Steve Gulyas and his trusty Husky dog: that's what the Quitend jacket remembers. With the arrival of autumn, when the climate begins to shyly change, it becomes more complicated to decide what to wear before leaving the house.

Usually we dress in onion or in layers, because it can happen that in the morning the climate is colder and then, during the day, it becomes warmer thanks to the sun that makes the air warm and sometimes even summer.

.
In this period, the fateful moment to take our Husky out of the closet arrives, which has been with us for 50 years waiting for the coldest temperatures.

The quilted jacket and its history

It all began way back in 1960 when Colonel Steve Gulyas, an American aviator of the US Air Force stationed in Pennsylvania, was discharged for an eye disease. Since he was of English origin, he decided, together with his wife Edna, to return to his native town, in Tostock.

It was 1965 when Mr. Gulyas, a lover of hunting and horse riding, realized that he had
need a comfortable and weatherproof jacket. So he decided to create a quilted jacket with a light padding suitable for his cross country sorties.

When he went hunting or horseback riding, he used to be accompanied by his loyal Husky dog, for this reason the jacket takes the famous name of quilted.

Thanks to his characteristics, he soon became popular with members of the British Riding Club, increasing the demand so much that Steve Gulyas expanded his business.

In addition to the history of the Husky Ltd factory, located in the small village of Tostock in the county of Suffolk, where the famous huskies were made, he opened an equestrian center, the Husky Riding Center Ltd, just outside London, equipped with a
indoor stables, where he set up a corner for the sale of the famous Husky.

Initially they were only available in olive green and pale navy blue, but as demand increased, the product portfolio grew, as did the choice of colors for the jackets.

The queen Elisabeth and the Quilted jacket

Probably the most important factor in popularizing the jacket was the British Royal family: Queen Elizabeth used to wear a quilted husky jacket with a brown corduroy collar, for her horseback rides on the country estate, at Sandringham. House in Norfolk County.

In England, in the 80s, it was a symbol of belonging to a group: the "Sloane Ranger". The term Sloane Ranger, often abbreviated to Sloane, refers to a stereotype of a young man of the upper class.

Young people of the upper class who attend the most prestigious schools and universities such as Eton, Westminster and Sherborne, Oxford, St Andrews, Edinburgh, while for girls the most coveted Grammar School is the “Francis Holland” in Sloane Square of course.

These girls to boys wear expensive casual clothes, and drive expensive cars. They meet in the evening in the most exclusive nightclubs and pubs, such as the Withe Horse Pub, known as "Sloaney Pony" in Fulham or Admiral Codrington, known as "The Cod", in Chelsea.

This group of young people share common traits and lifestyle. The term is a play on words because Sloane hails from Sloane Square in Chelsa: a street famous for the wealth of its residents and patrons.

While Ranger can have two interpretations: the first female, derives from the western TV series "The Lone Ranger", as the young sloanes, after equestrian activities, used to walk the streets of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, known as " royal district ”, still wearing boots and riders pants, huskies and silk handkerchiefs
(Hermes) tied around the neck, just like in the famous TV series.

The second version is male and derives from the Ranger Rover car, the favorite vehicle of the British upper class. It is not clear who coined the term, and it is often associated with Peter York, style editor of Harpers magazine
& Queen and co-author of The Official Sloane Ranger Handbook.

Precisely in his book he explains that the perfect example of Sloane Ranger was the sweet and beautiful Lady Diana Spencer, before marrying Prince Charles.

Characteristics of the quilted jacket

Remained unchanged over the years, this quilted nylon jacket features a hip length, the typical corduroy shirt collar, snap buttons, patch pockets and is naturally quilted.

It has a matelassé processing: that is, it highlights decorative seams on the surface, which intersect forming a lozenge pattern holding together two layers of fabric together with a third layer of the padding, the latter made with only 80 grams of stratified, reinforced and compressed polyester .

Versatile and comfortable, this jacket comes with a regular fit and a soft fit. Ideal to be worn over a full-bodied Shetland sweater combined with informal corduroy trousers, or to be worn over a classic business opsak suit.

Very eclectic, it is a passepartout with an unmistakable style both in the countryside and in the city, and remains a
staple of the true gentleman's wardrobe.
